Spring/Summer 2008 Volunteer Opportunities

For Individuals:

Special Summer Intern Opportunities

Feinstein Center for Citizenship & Immigration

Two positions available

We are seeking two interns to collaboratively teach a class of adult immigrants working to prepare for the citizenship exam.    The class is held on Saturday mornings, beginning on Saturday May 24th and classes continue for 14 weeks, ending on August 23rd.   Classes are held from 10 am until noon.  Resource materials and support will be provided by IIRI staff.   The best candidates will show commitment and interest in working with people with often limited English skills.  This is a great opportunity for college students in the teaching field or those interested in working with a diverse population.

Mentors and Tutors for newly arrived Refugees
We are seeking Mentors and Tutors with daytime volunteer availability for these individuals and families.  Mentors will assist with general orientation to U.S. culture, help with everyday needs and activities, employment advice and assistance, health and family matters. Tutors will assist adult learners to improve their English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Volunteers should be available at least once a week for a minimum of four months. Agency staff will provide a client profile and needs assessment, and work hand-in-hand with the volunteer to provide services. Volunteers who are patient, reliable, caring, and have good organizational skills are sought.

Please note:  All other summer internship positions have been filled.

For groups:

We are seeking community, student, faith-based or other groups who are interested in volunteering to help with initial resettlement of a newly arriving refugee family.  Needs range from greeting new arrivals at the airport to helping with set up and furnishing of a first apartment, along with ensuring that all basic family needs are met.
