Planned
giving is a meaningful and often easy way of making a charitable
gift. Some assistance and planning from your attorney,
tax advisor, insurance agent or other financial advisor may be
needed to complete the donation.
A planned gift to the International Institute
will ensure that immigrants and refugees in Rhode Island will
continue to receive high quality services. Since 1921,
International Institute Rhode Island has continued to serve
as a first-stop, full-service center providing services to
immigrants and refugees of all nationalities throughout Rhode
Island and Massachusetts. The support of
donors and volunteers has made this vision a reality for over
85 years.
The 1921 Society of the International
Institute of Rhode Island
The 1921 Society of the International Institute
of Rhode Island, formed in 2007, recognizes and thanks individuals
who remember IIRI though a bequest or other planned gift. The
name – The 1921 Society of IIRI – was selected to
recognize the year that the IIRI was founded.
Who qualifies for membership?
• Individuals who remember
IIRI in their will and who notify us of their intention
• Individuals who make
a gift to IIRI by means of a charitable remainder trust,
charitable annuity, life insurance policy or other estate plan.
As a member of the 1921 Society, you will be invited
to special IIRI events and be recognized (anonymously, if you
prefer) in our Annual Report. All members of the Society
will receive a special gift of appreciation.
To join, simply notify the International Institute
of Rhode Island that you have included us in your estate plan. Please
note we do not require you to tell us the specific details of
your estate gift.
BEQUESTS
Making a Bequest in Your
Will
In addition to providing for family and loved ones,
a charitable bequest in your will is a thoughtful way to leave
your legacy. The easiest and most familiar way to make
a planned gift is a bequest in your will. Bequests
can be made in number of ways: stated dollar amount, percentage,
specific assets (such as savings bond), or a residual portion
of your estate. We encourage you to always seek legal counsel
when creating or revising your will.
How do I make a bequest gift to the International
Institute of Rhode Island?
Making a bequest gift is one of the simplest ways
to make a gift. Below are three examples of language that
may assist you and your attorney:
• A specific bequest “I
leave the sum of (amount) to the International Institute of
RI.”
• A residuary bequest “I
leave (x percent) of all the rest, residue, and remainder
of my estate to the International Institute of RI.”
• A contingent bequest “I
give (amount) to my nephew, John Doe, if he is living, otherwise
to the International Institute of RI.”
OTHER PLANNED GIFTS
Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract
in which the donor makes a personally significant gift and
receives income-for-life in exchange.
Charitable Trusts
Trusts are a good way to manage assets and
can be created with the help of certified legal and financial
advisors. The types of trusts available vary widely,
but the three most frequently used for charitable purposes
are living trusts, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable
lead trusts.
Life Insurance and Retirement Plans
One of the easiest planned gift to make
might be to designate a life insurance policy or a percentage
of your life insurance policy or retirement plan to IIRI. You
can keep your family and loved ones as beneficiaries while
making a charitable planned gift.
If you are interested in considering a planned
gift, we encourage you to speak with your family’s financial
and/or legal advisors in order to find the vehicle that best
suits your needs. For general information about planned
giving options the Planned Giving Design Center (http://www.pgdc.net/)
has excellent resources.
