Tell-A-Friend:
| September 17, 2009 Celebrate Citizenship! Today is national Citizenship Day! Today is National Citizenship Day, a holiday to honor those who have become American Citizens and to focus on the unique rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship.
Here at IIRI, we congratulate and celebrate with the thousands of immigrants and refugees from around the world who have passed through our doors on their path to citizenship. Every year, IIRI’s federally accredited caseworkers, immigration attorney and citizenship teachers assist hardworking newcomers to achieve the American Dream.
Becoming a U.S. Citizen requires diligence, dedication and patience. To apply for U.S. Citizenship, an applicant must pay a $675 fee, be photographed and fingerprinted, and file a Naturalization application. The processing of an application can take anywhere from 8 months up to two years. Every applicant is interviewed by a representative of the local U.S Citizenship & Naturalization Services office, and must pass a Citizenship Exam consisting of a test of English language oral, reading and writing skills and a Civics test about U.S. history and government. The final step in the process is attendance at an Oath ceremony where new citizens come together to pledge their allegiance to the United States. For more information about becoming a U.S. Citizen, call us at 401-784-8650 or visit our Feinstein Center of Citizenship & Immigration.
