|
October 14, 2005
Local Organizations Salute United Nations Day – October 24, 2005 Come Celebrate United Nations Day on October 24th at 4:00 p.m. at the Rhode Island State House Rotunda with Plan USA, International Institute Rhode Island, and other local organizations. This year’s United Nations Day theme is Child Health and Survival: Helping the Most Vulnerable. Rhode Island’s celebration of United Nations Day will feature an art exhibit presenting children’s artwork from around the world and speakers will include: International Institute Rhode Island Executive Director William Shuey, Plan USA Chief Operating Officer Maja Cubarrubia, and child youth advocates. All are invited to attend in support of the United Nations and child advocates around the world. In 1945, the United States was one of fifty original signatories of the United Nations Charter. Today, sixty years later, 191 nations are United Nation member states. Each U.S. president, beginning with Harry Truman, has issued a proclamation asking citizens to observe United Nations Day and to reflect on the importance of the United Nations to our national interest, and to Americans individually. Across the country, states will hold events to recognize this important day. For more
