Dear Friends and Supporters

My name is Ellen Gallagher, Outreach Coordinator at IIRI.  As part of my work here at the Institute, I am representing IIRI on a group called Immigrants United.

Immigrants United is a campaign of local organizations and individuals coming together to promote fairness, respect and civil rights.  Immigrants United has recently endorsed The Campaign for Fairness, Respect & Civil Rights, a legislative platform that promotes racial and economic equality for every Rhode Islander.

Today Rhode Island is at a crossroads. The decisions we make will inform the economic, social and political future of our state.

The Campaign for Fairness, Respect and Civil Rights will bring us one step closer to the Rhode Island we seek to create: a Rhode Island based on hope, community, unity, safety and fairness – a Rhode Island where neighbors help each other and work together to make our state stronger.

This platform comes as the result of many conversations that we’ve had with the various immigrant communities in Rhode Island.  We found that Rhode Islanders want a state where:

  • all workers are protected from discrimination
  • our neighbors don’t have to fear contacting the police, especially if they have been victims of crimes
  • all Rhode Islanders are free from discrimination when trying to rent an apartment or get a job
  • all students in Rhode Island’s schools are able to look to their future with hope and aspirations of bettering their lives by attending college
  • our roads are safe and all drivers are licensed
  • all of our children have access to preventative health care

We encourage you to voice your support for this legislation by contacting your state legislators.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Ellen Gallagher
