Volunteers Needed
IIRI is participating in a 6 month national campaign to encourage legal immigrant residents to apply for citizenship. Volunteers are needed
for a special one day citizenship application event on Saturday, July 21st, with a training session on the evening of Thursday, July 19th. To sign up for this training or for more information on this volunteer opportunity, contact Michelle Mejia at mmejia@iiri.org or 401.784.8615

IIRI Refugee Resettlment Lends a Helping Hand to Children
Mathias Ntahonkilie and his wife, Josephine Ndimugwanko, arrived in Rhode Island in September of 2006 with their 7 children, and little else except for the clothes on their backs and their documents. They arrived as one of the first families from a group of refugees known as the 1972 Burundians. Primarily of Hutu ethnicity, this group of refugees fled their homeland of Burundi, Africa in mid-1972 following a campaign of violence by the Tutsi-dominated government against the Hutu population and were settled in Tanzanian refugee camps. Like many Burundian families, all seven children were born and have lived in refugee camps their entire lives.

World Refugee Day: Keeping the flame of Hope Alive
On May 14th Rhode Island celebrated World Refugee Day and honored the work of Waitstill and Martha Sharp. Mayor David Cicilline presented the first Waitstill and Matha Sharp Award for Refugee Service to three oustanding individuals who have supported Rhode Island's new refugee arrivals: Martha Sharp Joukowsky, Artemis Joukowsky, and Toua Kue.

21st Annual Spring Carnival Ball Continues IIRI's Festive Tradition
Over 1,000 people danced the night away at Rhode-on-the-Pawtuxet, raising more than $130,000 to benefit IIRI's programs and services for immigrants and refugees in Rhode Island and provinig the ball is still the most diverse party of the year in Rhode Island.
