For immediate release:
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS
20th Annual Spring Carnival Ball, Saturday, April 22nd from 8PM - 12AM at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet with hosts Barbara Morse-Silva from NBC10 and Dr. Pablo Rodriguez
The 20th Annual Spring Carnival Ball, one of Rhode Island’s longest running fundraiser, will be held on Saturday, April
22, 2006 from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet in Cranston. All proceeds from the evening will
benefit Rhode Island’s immigrant and refugee communities. With the reputation of being one of the Ocean
State’s best and most diverse parties of the year, the Spring Carnival Ball is renown for its quality international entertainment, cuisine, and high energy.
This year’s “gala extraordinaire”, celebrating 20 years for the Spring Carnival Ball, will feature Jose Conde y Ola
Fresca, a popular Cuban roots band from New York City that claims they will “blow the roof off”, Big Nazo
characters, a local New Orleans style marching band, Belly Dancers, a Chinese Dragon with Yo-Yo Dancers,
Tony Felix as DJ, WaterFire Providence, and fine catering by Russell Morin.
In honor of this 20th anniversary event, the Spring Carnival Ball, is being chaired by not one but two of our state’s
finest business leaders, namely Bank Rhode Island’s President and CEO, Merrill W. Sherman, and Taco, Inc.’s
President, John Hazen White, Jr.
Spearheaded by Merrill W. Sherman, Bank Rhode Island was created in 1996 as the second largest de novo bank
in American history, tripling in size since it opened its doors. According to Sherman, the bank is delighted to
partner with the International Institute because it “reaches an important segment of the Rhode Island population
with services critical to their surviving and thriving. This work strengthens the community where we live, work
and do business. We are proud to lend our support not only to the Institute's mission to enable immigrants and
refugees to become self-reliant, invested participants in our communities, but also to its vision of increased
respect for, and understanding of, diversity throughout the state."
“Taco and Bank Rhode Island’s collaboration with International Institute Rhode Island sends the important
message to our state’s business community that immigrants and refugees are a vital part of this state’s workforce,”
explains Bill Shuey, Executive Directory of International Institute, “Supporting and encouraging their educational
needs is not only the right thing to do, it is also good business. We are thrilled to have such outstanding Co-Chairs as friends and supporters of our cause.”
Tickets for the 20th Annual Spring Carnival Ball are $35 each ($15 for students) and may be purchased in
advance by calling 401-784-8634. Patron tickets are available at $150 for two admissions to the Patron Reception
from 7 PM to 8 PM and the Ball. A limited number of tickets will also be available at the door.
Read the full press release here.
Please call Sarah Parrott at 401-784-8634 for more specific information about the Ball and/or how to become a sponsor.
The International Institute of
Rhode Island's mission is to enable all area residents,
especially immigrants and refugees, to become self-reliant,
invested participants in our communities, while fostering
respect and understanding among all people.
