IIRI receives Federal Grant as part of the Citizenship Consortium

The Citizenship Consortium, a group of five Rhode Island non-profit organizations providing citizenship services to immigrants and refugees, has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Office.  One of only 13 such grants awarded across the United States, the award will allow the agencies to provide increased outreach to hard-to-reach populations including the elderly, refugees, and victims of domestic violence, and to hold citizenship classes to prepare them for the citizenship exam.

In addition to IIRI, Consortium members include Progreso Latino (lead agency), Genesis Center, Diocese of Providence, and The Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative.

According to Bill Shuey, IIRI’s Executive Director, “The Consortium has a demonstrated commitment and successful history of reaching and serving immigrants and refugees with programs that include citizenship and English Language classes, citizenship application and legal representation assistance, and social services.  This network is strategically located in urban centers across the state where immigrants live.  This collaborative approach to helping our community was key to obtaining this new federal grant."
