Tell-A-Friend: | Celebrate World Refugee Day 2009 Right now, as war and violent conflict rage around the world, people just like you are running — for their lives, their families, their dignity and their very survival. They often have to leave everything behind. And they leave with nothing but their hope, courage and determination. They are refugees. For the 42 million uprooted refugees around the world, a shortage or lack of the essentials of life - clean water, food, sanitation, shelter, health care and protection from violence and abuse - means that every day can be a struggle just to survive. Refugee resettlement is a humanitarian effort that benefits some of the most vulnerable people on the planet. IIRI resettles over 95% of all Rhode Island refugees and is the only agency to accept “free cases,” those without anchor families. In recent years, we’ve welcomed refugees from Benin, Burundi, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Eritrea, Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, and Thailand. IIRI’s Refugee Resettlement Department offers a strong helping hand to Rhode Island’s refugees. Our caring, multi-lingual staff provides cultural orientation, a first apartment, food, clothing, health screenings, school enrollment, skills training and employment resources. Please join us in celebrating World Refugee Day (June 20th), as we recognize the courage and resilience of refugees. If you’d like to help Rhode Island’s refugees, contact Mary Ellen Lynch at 401-784-8649 or melynch@iiri.org

Call for Volunteers: Attorneys needed to help Iraqi refugees We are seeking attorneys to help our Iraqi refugee clients on a pro-bono basis with applications and appeals related to Social Security disability benefits. Currently one case has been denied and there are 8 more cases pending. These Iraqis, who were the victims of torture, political and religious persecution in their country, are all legal residents here in Rhode Island. If you can help, please contact Baha Sadr at bsadr@iiri.org or 401-784-8611. Thank you!
